L-Carnitine is an amino acid derivative that transports fatty acids into muscle cell mitochondria, where they are burned for energy. The body produces it naturally and we get some from food (meat, dairy) — but high doses as a supplement can slightly improve fat metabolism and endurance.
Who benefits? Endurance athletes (cycling, running, triathlon), trainees in caloric deficit with cardio, and adults 40+ (natural production declines). For strength athletes, the effect is smaller.
L-Carnitine forms differ in focus — fat metabolism vs cognitive function.
The most common form for fitness. Target: fat metabolism, post-workout recovery, modest fat-burning support. Dose: 1000-2000mg daily, 30 minutes pre-workout or cardio.
Acetylated form that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Target: cognitive function, cerebral-level energy, age-related support. Optimal for 40+. Dose: 500-1500mg daily, morning or with breakfast.
For heart function support. Cardiovascular health, optimal heart operation. Less common for athletes.
L-carnitine alone does not burn fat. Research confirms: the effect is small, especially without caloric deficit and intense training. Expected: 5-10 percent more fat metabolism during cardio, 1-2 days less muscle soreness after workout. Fat loss "magic" — no.
